Artist Analysis Example

This piece of artwork is called Red Canna and has been produced by the artist Georgia O’Keefe.

In this image I can see flowing, organic shapes in a range of warm colours. The work is abstract and this has been created by the artist’s manipulation of scale and close up focal point.

The colours in this piece of artwork are strong and vibrant. Warm, Harmonious colours have been used for example red, oranges and yellows. This creates a relaxing and calming experience for the viewer. The atmosphere in enhanced by the smooth application of paint. The inclusion of a purple tonal range off sets the main harmonious colours and helps to create a sense of depth within the composition.

The artist has appropriately chosen oil paints to produce the artwork as this medium is suitable for the smooth transitional application of blending.

Due to the close up composition and abstract nature of this work, the viewer is able to interpret the artwork in different ways, for example, it could be said that elements of the composition have reference to the female form. Others may suggest flames, flowers or landscapes.

I chose to write about this piece of artwork because of the strong, bold colours used. I would like to be inspired by this colour palette and composition as I create my own natural forms painting.
